Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO₄)

A rugged, low-cost battery chemistry, very common in Chinese EVs and entry trims. It handles daily use well and tolerates charging to 100% better than others.

LFP (lithium iron phosphate) is the all-terrain chemistry: cheaper, more thermally stable and long-lived. BYD leans on it heavily, as do Tesla's standard versions and most Chinese EVs.

It has one famous quirk: its voltage curve is very flat in the middle. In plain terms, voltage barely changes between 30% and 70% charge, so estimating charge from voltage is unreliable in that range — which is why it pays to charge LFP to 100% now and then so the car can recalibrate.

It also ages differently: it tends to lose capacity more slowly in normal use, but it's more sensitive to charging in the cold. 'End of life' thresholds set for nickel chemistries don't apply to it the same way.
