Chinese EVs in Latin America: good batteries, big warranties—and how to get the most out of both

Chinese brands gave Latin America mass access to electric mobility, with durable LFP chemistry and generous warranties. If you own one, you made a smart buy—here's how to get the most out of that battery and that warranty.

Chinese EVs in Latin America: good batteries, big warranties

If you bought a new electric car in Latin America over the past few years, there's a good chance it wears a Chinese badge—and odds are you made a very smart purchase. BYD, MG, GWM, Chery, JAC and company didn't just show up: they democratized electric mobility across the region, with well-equipped cars, competitive prices, and batteries that last longer than most people think.

And this is no small thing. In Uruguay, EVs already make up around 30% of new cars sold, and nearly nine out of ten are Chinese brands like BYD, JAC and Omoda (El Observador). In Costa Rica—one of the adoption leaders in the Americas—BYD tops the market (Tico Times). And in Mexico, BYD has come to account for roughly 70% of the electric-and-plug-in-hybrid segment (Mexico Business). Mass electromobility reached the region on the back of these brands.

And like any good purchase, this one is sweeter once you know how to look after it. You've got two big things working in your favor—a durable battery and a generous warranty. Let's see how to get the most out of both.

The solid foundation: LFP chemistry is among the most durable

Many of these cars—BYD with its "Blade," for instance—run on LFP (lithium iron phosphate) batteries, and that's great news for durability. LFP is more thermally stable and tends to handle more charge cycles than higher-density chemistries like NMC; in exchange, it stores a bit less energy per kilo. Bottom line: you start with a battery built to last.

It has just one practical quirk: its voltage-versus-state-of-charge curve is extremely flat, so its health can't be read "by eye"—not with a home voltmeter, not with a glance at the dash. That's not a defect; it's chemistry. It just means that to know its real condition, you need a proper analysis rather than a hunch. Your warranty is good—and it travels with the car, too

Another real advantage: several of these battery warranties are transferable. If you sell the car, the remaining coverage passes to the next owner—a selling point in your favor on resale day. The manufacturer's promise stays standing even as the car changes hands.

The one thing the warranty doesn't tell you (and how to fill it in)

The warranty is an excellent floor of protection, but it's built for a single scenario: it covers the battery if its capacity drops below 70% within the term (8 years or ~160,000 km is typical—the same floor set, for example, by the U.S. federal standard, 8 years/160,000 km). What it doesn't tell you is where your battery sits today within that range:

  • Is it at 95% or at 73%? Both are "within warranty," but they're worlds apart on resale day—after all, the battery is between 20% and 50% of the car's value (Swiss Re, via the regional financial press).
  • How fast is it degrading? A well-cared-for battery loses little and loses it evenly; the pace tells you whether you'll reach the end of the term with plenty of margin—which is the most likely outcome—or whether it's worth keeping an eye on.

The good news is that much of this takes care of itself: these batteries are aging well. The fleet study from Geotab, covering 22,700 vehicles across 21 models, found average degradation of just 2.3% per year. Knowing your exact number simply turns a warranty on paper into concrete peace of mind—and into a pricing argument when you sell.

How to get the most out of it

This is where your electric's passport comes in. In a region where official service networks are still being built, having your own record of the battery is worth even more. What to do with this

  • If you already own a Chinese EV: enjoy it—it's a good machine. And while you're at it, get a scan and start recording your battery's real condition; the day you sell, that history is worth money.
  • If you're buying a used one: ask two things—how much warranty is left and what condition the battery is in today. A transferable warranty over a healthy, documented battery is, quite simply, a great buy (more in buying a used EV without surprises).
